Although he was compelled to set the story a century earlier, in the era of Richelieu, La Traviata emerged as a powerful blend of lavish social scenes, unforgettable choruses, and profoundly emotional arias. First performed in 1853 and inspired by Alexandre Dumas fils’ La Dame aux Camélias, La Traviata remains one of the most beloved operas in the classical repertoire. Through the compelling journey of Violetta and Alfredo, Verdi explores timeless themes of love, sacrifice, social prejudice, and redemption.
